Raw Roads: Turning Tides 2013

In 2013, Raw Material launched its touring programme Raw Roads.

Raw Roads: Turning Tides saw a team of Brixton’s finest MCs and DJs go on the road to deliver this participatory project that aimed to inspire and facilitate expressive verbal and vocal content among young people aged 12 to 24 with their backs against the tide.

They went to:

  • Southend
  • Ramsgate/Margate
  • Folkestone
  • Hastings
  • Brighton
  • Portsmouth
  • London

In every city, the artist team delivered two half-day workshops that culminated in a finale performance event in each location. The project used a mobile studio and DJ system, and facilitated the creation of new Spoken Word, Urban Music and MC performances.

The project drew on oral traditions, the poetic MC, the language of the street, creative writing, lyricism and spoken word to create a live forum and online archive for the exchange of ideas and information. The activities were designed to develop confidence building, performance skills, methods of self expression, and the invitation for young people to find their voice and form an individual expression of the key issues in their lives through the arts.

The results were fantastic: so many local talents, with so much to say about their own realities.

This year, in 2015, Raw Material will be touring their new project Raw Roads: Invisible along with free workshops aimed at young people. Find out more here.
